Tanjung Pelepas to add 1 million TEU in 2022

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) will invest US$178.7 million (RM750 million) to expand its capacity by almost 1 million TEU during 2022.

More specifically, the Malaysian port that currently has a capacity of 11.5 million TEU, is projected to grow to 12.5 million TEU within the next six months.

“We will receive 18 new quayside and yard cranes, as well as an ongoing yard expansion,” declared the ports CEO, Marco Neelsen.

He also unveiled plans for the installation of one more berth close to Berth 1, in order to expand PTP’s footprint for cargo to and from Sumatra.

Apart from the terminal footprint, Neelsen explained that the investment would focus on “improving efficiency and customer experience.”

“We are currently expanding our Free Zone with the development of an 81-acre (327,795 m2) site in Tanjung Adang, which is planned to be concluded by early 2023,” he said.

PTP has registered a container volume throughput of 11.2 million TEU at the end of 2021, representing an increase of 14% year-on-year, compared to 9.8 million TEU in 2020.

A joint venture between Malaysians MMC Group and The Hague’s APM Terminals, PTP reached a milestone by becoming the first container terminal in Malaysia to surpass 11 million TEU throughput volume in a year.
